Just months ago, Anna could only imagine herself behind the wheel of a haul-out truck, surrounded by rolling fields of sugar cane. Today, that dream is within reach.

In January 2025, ready to steer herself onto the right track, Anna joined the Parent Pathways service delivered in Ayr.

Inspired by her father-in-law’s work in the cane industry, Anna set her sights on driving haul-out trucks in the cane fields, ready to roll into the next cane season in June 2025.

Her Support Mentor was immediately impressed by Anna’s drive and ambition. Together, they mapped out a Goal Plan to prepare Anna for the industry, starting with a major milestone: earning her Heavy Rigid (HR) licence.

Getting an HR licence would not only set Anna up for success in taking on the cane fields – it would set her up for a variety of other opportunities across industries such as construction, bus driving, general freight, and other hauling opportunities.

Her support mentor helped her access hands-on industry training in Townsville, and a total of six lessons in the BMAC trucks to build her confidence behind the wheel.

Anna had never gotten behind the wheel of a truck before, and leaping straight into the deep end, her first lesson took her straight into city traffic.

“I was very very scared at the start. In my first lesson, they took me straight out to the city – I don’t even like driving my car there. But after a while, I got more comfortable and confident,” Anna said.

Despite her initial fears, she approached her lessons with a can-do attitude and in time, her confidence skyrocketed, sharing her enthusiasm with her support mentor at the end of each lesson.

When the time came to take her test, with her confidence revved up, she passed, proudly earning her HR licence.

“My support mentor was amazing; she helped me a lot. I would not have been able to do this without Bamara – they were amazing,” Anna said.

By cane season next year, when her daughter is a little bit older, Anna will be ready to take to the fields, driving side by side with her partner, who is pursuing the same line of work.

However, her ambitions don’t stop there, and she won’t be punching the breaks anytime soon.

Fuelled by her recent success, she’s now studying to become a hairdresser, laying the groundwork to launch her own business and take charge of her future.

Anna has gone the extra mile, fuelled by unyielding dedication and local support from Parent Pathways to lay a firm foundation for her future.
