In June 2025, Anna achieved her Heavy Rigid (HR) licence, bringing her one step closer to her goal of getting behind the wheel of a haul-out truck during the sugar cane season.

However, she was also thinking ahead.

Wanting to future-proof her career, Anna set her sights on building skills that would support her during the off-season and provide more consistent, year-round employment.

It was one day, while attending her daughter’s swimming school, that inspiration struck.

Motivated by this new idea, Anna approached Sarah, her Parent Pathways Support Mentor, to develop a plan to help her work towards a career as a swimming instructor.

Impressed by Anna’s determination and drive, Sarah quickly got to work, supporting her to expand her skill set and gain the necessary experience.

Through the Parent Pathways Engagement Fund, Sarah was able to help Anna get her First Aid Certificate, Blue Card, and Working with children Check. She also enrolled her into the Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course to get her a nationally recognised qualification for teaching in February 2026.

As Anna progressed through her studies, her passion for the role continued to grow, along with her confidence and excitement for the future.

Following the completion of her practical and theory components, she found an opportunity that aligned with her goals and lifestyle and dove right in to pursue it as work placement.

Anna is currently employed as a Swimming Teacher, making a splash in a career she truly enjoys.

“One week Anna is talking about maybe becoming a swim teacher and would need to complete these tasks to get there, and the next she’s completed the tasks and is working for the swim school. Absolutely amazing!” Sarah, Support Mentor, said.

Anna’s dedication has been a constant throughout her journey. From driving haul-out trucks during the cane season to teaching children to swim in the warmer months, she has built a flexible and sustainable career path – one that sets her up for success in every season.

“I’m very thankful for Bamara Parent Pathways for supporting and funding my goals. I am extremely happy that I have found something I’m very passionate about,” Anna said.
