On Monday 20 July, Bamara Training delivered successful Cultural Awareness Training, hosted on Darug Country and commissioned by Community Junction Group

Facilitated by proud Bundjalung woman and Bamara’s National Cultural and Wellbeing Services Operations Manager, Jamie-Lee, the one-day session explored topics including identity, cultural sensitivities, and the principles of cultural safety.

“The training was amazing and so informative. I have a First Nations background, and I’m always trying to learn and discover how I can help make a difference. I related to the topics discussed, and it was great to connect and talk about them,” said Chelsey, Certificate III Educator at Community Junction Group.

Formal learning was enriched by Jamie-Lee’s personal stories and lived experience, giving participants meaningful insights they could apply in the workplace, at home and throughout the wider community.

“There was a lot of depth and emotion, and it really spoke to me. I thought about the different ways I can use this knowledge – in my work, my personal life and the community – to be more understanding,” said Angie, Certificate III Educator at Community Junction Group.

A key focus was navigating difficult but necessary conversations and approaching them with confidence, respect and cultural sensitivity.

Participants also explored the origins and traditional significance of Acknowledgements of Country and Welcomes to Country, along with how these practices have evolved and why they remain important today.

“It dispelled some of the myths surrounding cultural awareness and gave people more confidence to ask questions and build meaningful relationships with First Nations peoples. It inspired me to learn more and find ways to better embed culture into what we do,” said Linda, Communities and Families Operations Manager at Community Junction Group.

The session created space for honest discussion, thoughtful reflection, and deeper cultural understanding, leaving participants with practical knowledge they can carry into their professional and personal lives.

Cultural Awareness Training aims to empower our participants, foster meaningful engagement, and encourage the sharing of knowledge based on respect and understanding.
