When it came to grasping the bigger picture and where things were heading in life, Demetrius realised that he needed a spark, inspiration, stability, and direction to reach his goals and discover his true potential.
Through the power of the Transition to Work program delivered by Bamara in Alice Springs, Demetrius received local support, gained confidence, and accessed valuable services from local organisations that perfectly aligned with career goals that he recently set in place.
As a result, he is a determined first-year apprentice plumber based in Uluru, and he is learning on the job through a Certificate III in Plumbing.
Demetrius, who grew up in Alice Springs, connected with our team in November 2023 to get a bit of help in finding a job. During his first months in the Transition to Work program, he showed interest in getting into a trade and began to explore opportunities across the Northern Territory seriously.
Our team helped Demetrius by creating a solid pathway plan, fine-tuning his resume so he could start applying for jobs, and access to funding to purchase workwear and safety gear, as well as a new bike to help with his transport needs in getting to work.
Demetrius also participated in local industry tours, which connected job seekers to local employers across Alice Springs. During these tours, he got a taste of how industries and trades operate across various local workplaces.
“It was important to ensure that Demetrius knew we were supporting him and genuinely helping him achieve his career goals,” said Bamara Youth Mentor Corrina.
“He is polite, respectful, family-oriented, very humble, and I’m excited about where he is heading for his future.”
In April 2024, Demetrius landed an opportunity advertised through Apprenticeships Northern Territory to kickstart an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships Northern Territory is an Apprentice Connect Provider delivering the Australian Apprenticeship Support Services in the NT, and are helping Demetrius through mentoring, and the support he needs to complete his apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships NT operate with the goal of improving apprenticeship completion and satisfaction rates through the provision of tailored mentoring support to apprentices and employers prior to commencement and while they are undertaking their Australian Apprenticeship. Apprenticeships Northern Territory is jointly funded by the Australian Government – Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) and the Northern Territory Government to provide both administrative and regulatory functions on their behalf.
Demetrius is settling well into his apprenticeship, honing his skills, and working in a team environment. His next steps are getting his driver licence to drive to work and becoming more independent.
Corrina stays in touch with Demetrius to ensure he has the support and guidance he needs. It is something Corrina looks forward to, where they can both have a yarn and offer any help Demetrius may need.
“Just seeing how genuinely happy he is these days, with a great glow, especially when he got his bike, makes me feel great,” said Corrina.
“Employment makes a significant difference in life, and that is what our job is all about – working together to achieve great outcomes for our participants.”
Bamara is a Workforce Australia provider of Transition to Work, a government initiative for young people aged 15-24.
