Elaine had her sights set on a career in healthcare – a passion that sparked from her own experience helping in her local community in Daly River.
She began studying a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice, but balancing study, work, and caring for her family of four proved a challenge.
After her sister recommended Bamara and the Parent Pathways service, Elaine reached out to our Palmerston team in November 2024 and connected with Senior Support Mentor, Edith.
Edith delved into Elaine’s interests and goals and was ready to do all she could to help Elaine stay on track to finishing her qualification and pursuing her passions.
Together, they created a Goal Plan aimed at achieving Elaine’s short-term goals of finding a job to support herself and her family while she finished her studies.
With Edith’s support, Elaine completed her First Aid Course and obtained her Working with Children’s Check and Police Check. Edith also helped provide essentials to prepare for work, such as a mobile phone, work clothes, and footwear, as well as Engagement Support Vouchers to assist with everyday costs.
Elaine embraced new opportunities and gave everything a go, yet she was still searching for a role that really spoke to her and aligned with her interests.
Her hard work and patience finally paid off when she was offered a job in health research.
“She studied so hard to get her dream job, and she seems so happy to now have full time work. It makes me very happy,” Edith said.
Not only is the role in her area of aspiration, but Elaine is now a part of a friendly, welcoming team.
“At work, I love that everybody is friendly and always smiling. You never see a negative face. I also love the opportunity to meet a lot of new people from all around the world,” Elaine said.
While this amazing result is a testament to Elaine’s dedication, it was the additional tailored support from Parent Pathways and Edith that played a key role in helping her balance her goals and responsibilities.
“Edith is the best. She was flexible and made things easy for me. I felt like she really cared,” Elaine said.
With this incredible start to a fulfilling career, Elaine is on track to completing her Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice and pursuing her long-term goal of becoming a midwife.
With her hard-work and determination that she’s shown us, we’re confident she’ll achieve her goal in no time.
