In December 2025, Eric was ready for a change. After exploring his options, he connected with our Mount Isa team through Workforce Australia Services to explore opportunities for his future.
With prior experience in scaffolding, Eric was keen to explore new pathways within the civil construction industry. He expressed a strong interest in transitioning into machine operation and was ready to take the next step in building a long-term career.
To support his goal, Eric’s Mentor assisted him in applying for a JobSeeker Grant to fund the training required to gain industry-relevant qualifications and improve his employment prospects.
In February 2026, his application was approved, and he enrolled into the Civil Construction Training program, a tailored program delivered by Martyr Training Services.
The Martyr Training team designed the program around Eric’s existing skills and experience, while also introducing new learning opportunities to broaden his capabilities across multiple areas.
The aim was to ensure he left the course job-ready and confident operating a range of equipment used across civil construction worksites.

Eric approached the training with genuine enthusiasm and a strong willingness to learn. He embraced every opportunity to develop new skills, bringing a level of energy and curiosity that reflected how much the opportunity meant to him.
“I wanted to do work that I loved. I always saw the machines as a kid and got excited about them – I didn’t know it’s what I wanted to do until now,” Eric said.
Over the five-day course, Eric successfully gained qualifications in:
“I’m immensely proud that he’s achieved what he’s done. He’s a very committed person and it’s good to see him so keen on giving it a good go,” Steven, Regional Team Leader Mount Isa and Alice Springs, said.
By the end of the program, Eric had built a strong foundation of practical skills and formal qualifications across multiple areas of plant operation.
More importantly, he left the training with renewed confidence and clear direction for his future in civil construction.
