Like many caregivers, Flora, a proud Torres Strait Islander woman and dedicated mum of four boys, had dreams for her future. All she needed was the right support to bring them to light.

In January 2025, she reached out to our team and joined the Parent Pathways service in Aitkenvale.

Although she wasn’t sure where to begin, her support mentor, Yogeeta, was ready to help her explore the possibilities.

Yogeeta immediately saw Flora’s potential, but more importantly, she wanted Flora to see it too. Together, they explored study and training options, and Yogeeta recommended the Employability Skills Training course. This course is designed to help participants uncover their strengths, build confidence, and discover new career pathways.

Flora embraced the opportunity. After completing Employability Skills Training, she returned to Yogeeta with a renewed sense of confidence and a clear direction: she wanted to pursue a Certificate III in Community Services.

A career in community services aligned perfectly for Flora, offering meaningful work, flexibility to fit with Flora’s family life and align to her values.

“I used to think that community services wasn’t for me. But now, this is what I really want to do. In my family, it’s my responsibility to look after our Elders.

“It’s a very important career path. I also want my boys to form connections with our Elders and show them how to respect their Elders regardless of who they are,” Flora said.

Now, with a clear goal in mind, Yogeeta is supporting Flora with her studies, ensuring that she has everything she needs to complete her Certificate III in Community Services stress-free.

This includes practical support like providing a laptop for coursework and covering vehicle registration costs so Flora can travel independently to her training sessions.

One of the things Flora appreciated most was being able to bring her kids along to appointments, ensuring that she could stay focused on her goals without missing any appointments or having to make extra caring arrangements.

Through the support and guidance, she received, Flora realised that being a parent doesn’t mean putting your aspirations on hold. It means having the courage to pursue them, knowing you’re not alone.

“We’re not only mums with kids at home. We also have dreams of what we want to do as a career in the future.

“Parent Pathways has helped me know that I’m not alone. It’s great that there is someone like Yogee out there to guide and support you,” Flora said.

Yogeeta, having watched Flora’s confidence blossom from her very first appointment, is thrilled for her journey so far, commending her for taking those first big steps into a bright future.

“I feel genuinely proud of Flora for taking that initial step, which has led to her current progress. It clearly demonstrates her commitment to her studies and her future,” Yogeeta said.

Now, with a clear path ahead, Flora is more determined than ever to complete her studies and pursue a career working in community services. We’re thrilled to be part of her journey and can’t wait to see the incredible impact she will make.
