It’s easy to see why Jack has a spring in his step these days.
His infectious energy and kindness, highlighted by the vibrant colours of his beloved Roosters, uplifts everyone around him as he embraces new experiences and opportunities that come his way.
Jack hails from Baradine, a small rural town roughly 200 kilometres north of Dubbo. He lives with Level 3 autism, loves trains, and has interests ranging from horse riding and fishing to camping.
Throughout his life, he has depended on his family for round-the-clock support to explore these interests.
Once Jack finished high school, it became clear to his mum, Beth, that he would need more support to navigate life after school and build the necessary skills to improve various aspects of his life.
Having researched extensively for options, in 2023, she reached out to Bamara for one-on-one services and support for Jack. She visited our Hub to explore the available programs through NDIS Disability Support Services firsthand.
“I wanted Jack to go to a place where he could actually gain something from it,” Beth said.
“It’s been a great service; I’ve been very impressed with the programs that Bamara has supplied for Jack.”
He enjoys making cookies and cupcakes in the Hub and going to social lunches each Wednesday but gets a real buzz when visiting the model train displays or experiencing the nostalgia on board a heritage train ride, which our team organises as part of regular excursions across Dubbo and Wellington.
He also holds his own, while staying in our respite and short-term accommodation, sharing the space with housemates under the care of our Support Mentors from Monday to Friday, and has forged new friendships along the way.
Bamara has helped him transition into society and become more independent,” Beth said.
For instance, when we’re out shopping, I can now give him some money so he can grab the cordial while I take care of something else.”
Throughout the week, he receives structured guidance to help develop personal care skills, such as getting ready in the morning and doing his laundry.
He is also focusing on managing a regimented diet. We have worked closely with him to improve his understanding of nutrition, paying special attention to the texture and variety of foods.
Support Mentors Alexis, Emma and Kimmy have been a constant source of encouragement for Jack throughout his journey and have been instrumental in helping him achieve his goals.
For Alexis, one of the most significant improvements in Jack has been how he now bonds with his peers. Initially hesitant to participate in group activities, she believes he has since come out of his shell.
“He has a wicked sense of humour, and when he first started here in the Hub, he used to stick to himself,” Alexis said.
“Now he just happily goes with the flow and gets involved.”
Emma particularly looks forward to her weekly round trip from Dubbo to Baradine, where she picks up Jack from home each Monday and drives him back on Fridays so he can spend time with his family over the weekend.
“During our drives, we often chat about animals, enjoy a bit of karaoke, and discuss our plans for the week ahead,” Emma said.
“He just makes you happy – it’s contagious, and being a part of his journey couldn’t make me prouder. I get to start and end my week with Jack.”
Kimmy has worked closely with Jack to help him get out into the community by providing support and encouragement every step of the way.
“He gets super excited when he says Alexi, Emma and I each morning – and super excited to see us all,” Kimmy said.
“He’s come a long way, from when he started to now, and I’m so proud of him.”
The positive changes in Jack’s life are evident to his family and everyone around him, and the personalised support he receives will help him develop these essential skills for the future, doing more things on his own and participating in his community.
We find it’s a good environment and very assuring that he’s in good care,” Beth said.
“We feel very secure and are proud of how he’s doing.”
