How Matt realised his ambitions and found his rhythm

Matt is someone who is always on the go, throwing himself in wholeheartedly to every opportunity he sets his sights on.

His Mentor, Sam, could sense his strong ambition from the first day he connected with the Port Macquarie team through Inclusive Employment Australia.

Already working as a musician, with gigs taking him from Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour, Matt was keen to broaden his career and explore opportunities in the support work industry.

Drawing on his own lived experience with autism, Matt felt his understanding and ability to connect with others could be a strength in supporting people living with disability.

With a shared interest in support work, and a mutual appreciation for fidget toys, Sam and Matt quickly built a strong rapport.

Together, they began working towards Matt’s goal of entering the industry while finding opportunities flexible enough to complement his existing work as a musician.

Sam supported Matt to complete the pre-employment requirements he needed, including his Working with Children Check, police check, NDIS Worker Screening Check and first aid certification. She also helped him identify a suitable contracting opportunity that offered the flexibility he was looking for.

Alongside his music and support work, Matt was also interested in driving for local food delivery services, giving him another flexible way to work around his existing commitments.

Today, Matt is successfully balancing three different types of work while building strong relationships with the people he supports. His varied roles have allowed him to pursue his interests, use his strengths and create a working life that suits him.

For Sam, seeing Matt’s progress since they first connected has been particularly rewarding.

“He’s made such good progress from when I met him to now. He’s succeeded quite a lot in getting contracting work. He’s a big inspiration,” Sam, Mentor, said.
