For Shontay, there’s no better feeling than leaving a salon with a fresh set of lashes and a renewed sense of confidence.

It’s this feeling that inspired her to pursue a career as a lash technician.

In June 2025, Shontay connected with our Mount Isa team through our Parent Pathways service.

From the get-go, Shontay was interested in finding an eyelash course to begin a career in the beauty industry. All she had to do was find an accredited course to get her started.

After researching her options, she found an accredited lash extension course that aligned with her career goals.

Recognising her commitment, her Support Mentor, Steven, worked alongside her to apply for a Jobseeker Grant to help cover the cost of the training.

In October 2025, she was approved for the Jobseeker Grant and began preparing for the course.

“Shontay is a determined young lady; she took the initiative and found a course she was keen to do. I’m really proud of her,” Steven said.

As part of the training, Shontay received a professional lash bed and lash kit, giving her all the tools she needed to start building her skills. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning the craft, regularly practising techniques on herself and her partner to refine her work and build confidence.

Throughout her journey, Steven remained a source of encouragement and support.

“Steven’s been really supportive. I wouldn’t have done anything if Steven didn’t give me that push of confidence,” Shontay said.

While completing her training, Shontay has also secured work with a local allied health business, gaining valuable workplace experience as she continues working towards her long-term goal.

Once she completes her qualification, Shontay hopes to become her own boss and launch her own lash extension business, helping others experience the same confidence and excitement that first inspired her career journey.
