As a proud mum to five kids, Soana was ready to go back to work after dedicated the last few years to raising her little ones – she just needed a helping hand getting started.

When a friend recommended the Parent Pathways service, Soana was hesitant at first, thinking it sounded too good to be true.

With her goal of returning to work on her mind, she contacted our Palmerston team to find out for herself.

In June 2025, she was connected with Senior Support Mentor Edith, who worked alongside her to develop a Goal Plan to identify career goals and map out the pathway forward.

“It was like when you ask kids what they want to be when they grow up; I asked myself the same question when I was 30,” Soana said.

Soana was drawn to the idea of working in a trade and was eager to gain the skills and qualifications needed to make it happen. Together, she and Edith planned her first steps: earning a forklift licence and a heavy rigid truck licence.

Although she had never driven a truck before, Soana faced the challenge head-on.

“It was very scary the first time, there was so much adrenaline. I drive a Prado, and it made my car feel like a hatchback,” Soana said.

With the initial nerves aside, practice made perfect, and she successfully attained her truck licence. She continued that string of success by also successfully attaining her forklift licence.

Now, with those two qualifications under her belt, she’s not slowing down. She plans to take on her Working at Heights and Working in Confined Spaces certificates next, opening the door to even more opportunities in trades.

As well as training, Edith supported her in accessing a police check and clothes for work.

In the meantime, while she continues to upskill, Soana has already secured a job in administration and delivery.

Not only did Parent Pathways help her navigate training, qualifications, and finding herself a job, but it also instilled confidence in trying to find herself again after being committed to her family for such a long time.

She had the courage to pursue something for herself and the motivation to keep working hard towards her goals.

“Thank you Bamara for the help they’ve been providing me. It’s especially helpful for parents trying to get back to work, and I really hope this reaches all of the parents out there that need the help,” Soana said.
