Kadisha, a young and resilient First Nations woman, set out to build a stable and secure future for herself and her child.
In October 2025, she connected with our Parent Pathways team in Townsville, bringing a strong sense of determination and readiness to begin her journey.
Working alongside her Support Mentor, Zara, Kadisha developed a personalised Goal Plan focused on two key priorities: securing stable housing and building a pathway to sustainable employment.
The first and most urgent step was finding a safe, permanent home.
Balancing the demands of parenting with the uncertainty of housing made it difficult for Kadisha to focus on her longer-term goals.
Zara helped Kadisha to access and complete a housing needs assessment and reached out to local providers to ensure priority listing to speed up the process.
Before long, Kadisha secured a home of her own – an important milestone that created the stability she needed to focus on her future.
She gravitated towards community services, backed by her passion for advocacy and supporting kids in care. This passion is deeply connected to her growing relationship with her First Nations identity, which she continues to strengthen through stories from her Ancestors and connections to Country and community.
After thorough research on the options for study and providers, Zara helped Kadisha enroll in a Certificate III in Community Services in January 2026.
Together, they created a flexible study schedule that allowed Kadisha to balance her coursework with family life and the responsibilities of establishing herself in her new home.
By April 2026, Kadisha had successfully completed her qualification within only a few months, maintaining a strong study–life balance while steadily progressing toward her long-term goals.
“It is incredibly rewarding to see Kadisha’s progress. Watching her transform her personal challenges into a professional career path is a testament to her strength and her commitment to building a better future for her child,” Zara, Support Mentor, said.
The shift in focus from crisis management to building a long-lasting future for her family has had a significant impact on her livelihood.
“I am so grateful for the empathy and support I received from the staff during my time in the program. The mentors truly made me feel safe, secure, and heard throughout every single interaction. This supportive environment has helped me build trust and makes me feel completely empowered to take on my future goals,” Kadisha said.
