Many of our National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants have been making incredible progress towards their employment goals through NDIS School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES), and their achievements so far have been nothing short of inspiring.

Through a variety of activities, participants are building the skills, confidence, and independence they need to take the next steps in their careers. Here’s a snapshot of what they’ve been up to.

Hitting the road with driving lessons and licensing

Our participants in the Driver Licensing Access Program (DLAP) in Dubbo have been kicking major goals. Some have proudly achieved their Learner’s licence and are ready to hit the road with driving lessons.  This is an incredible milestone not only for building their independence, but for opening the doors to more employment opportunities.

Hands-on hospitality training

On Thursdays, a group of participants attend TAFE Dubbo where they study their Certificate II in Hospitality. They recently had a chance to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced cafe environment where they crafted coffees, poured juices and whipped up delicious milkshakes.

Work Placement at 90 Degree Cafe

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can catch our participants on work placement at 90 Degree Cafe in Dubbo. Here, many of those studying their Certificate II in Hospitality can put their newfound skills to work, building confidence in interacting with customers, taking orders, and serving food and drinks to the community. This also presents a great opportunity to get their foot in the door for future paid employment success.

Helping the community with Meals on Wheels

On Tuesdays and Fridays, adorned in their high-vis vests, participants get out in the community with Meals on Wheels. They help vulnerable people in the area by delivering frozen meals to people’s doorstep. Not only is this a brilliant community endeavor, but this allows participants to develop skills in organisation, time management, and customer service.

Nurturing a future in early childhood

On Mondays and Fridays, NDIS participant Kate Taylor has been making progress towards her goal of working in early childhood through work experience at Dubbo Early Learning Centre.

Learning the ropes at the Saleyards

Kalan and Reece have been getting their hands dirty at the Saleyards, gaining hands-on experience in agriculture. From sorting and herding to feeding sheep and cattle, they’re learning valuable skills that could open the door to a future career in the industry.

“They have all been throwing themselves in and achieving great things. Everyone has such different goals for their futures. They all cheer each other on, making everyone’s time so enjoyable. I can’t wait to see the new activities come to fruition in the coming weeks,” Madeleine Carolan, Disability Support Worker, said.

We’re incredibly proud of the dedication and achievements of our SLES participants. From hospitality to community services, they’re laying the foundations for a bright and independent future.
