Returning to the workforce in pursuit of new horizons can be daunting at first. However, having access to local support to help set you up for success can make all the difference.

Megan is a proud First Nations woman, and mother of five children. She connected with Bamara in July 2024 seeking support to return to work.

In the past, she had worked in an office environment working in administrative roles, but returning to the workforce, she was looking for a change of scene.

Megan wanted to explore her options in other industries to find an opportunity that was both exciting and rewarding, where she could support herself and her family.

Before connecting with Bamara, she had heard about the Tiddas in Construction pre-employment program provided by Real Futures, which provided the training and certifications needed to lay the foundation for a career in the construction industry.

The Tiddas In Construction program was a three-week construction pre-employment program for First Nations women in the North Coast region of NSW, aiming to support women into careers in the construction industry.

After discussing the program with Bamara Support Mentor Mervyn Cannon, he created a pathway plan to get her a placement into the program, and to ensure she has sufficient support to get her through it.

Megan earned a place into the program delivered in Coffs Harbour, with the course fees covered by accessing the Participation Fund provided for participants of the ParentsNext program.

She also had assistance with covering the cost of fuel to help with the journey from Kempsey to Coffs Harbour.

With the support provided for her and with her unbridled determination, she showed up for every class, passing with flying colours, remaining dedicated and motivated to the very end.

Through the program, Megan gained:

  • A White card
  • Traffic Control Training
  • Working safely at heights ticket
  • Working in confined spaces ticket
  • Tool recognition and skills in the home

Exactly one month after first connecting with us, she successfully graduated from the Tiddas in Construction course in August 2024, gaining valuable qualifications desirable for working in the construction industry.

Getting the opportunity to pursue the training and qualifications to change her career skyrocketed Megan’s confidence and self-esteem.

“I am so proud of Megan and her determination to take the extra steps she realised she would need to take to change her career path,” Mervyn said.

Now equipped with a plethora of new skills, Megan is setting her sights on finding a local job in construction, with a particular interest in traffic control.

We wish her the best of luck for the bright future ahead of her and we look forward to continuing to support her on her journey.
