Shaquille, a young and determined First Nations man, had always envisioned a career as a professional AFL player – however, after suffering a knee injury, he was faced with the challenge of rethinking what the future may hold.

During this time, Shaquille discovered a natural strength in being a mentor for the younger generation, and helping guide them in the right direction.

Shaquille connected with our Alice Springs team through the Transition to Work program. He was ready to find work that aligned with his passions, and that would support his young family, including his partner and their four-month-old baby.

Shaquille worked closely with his Youth Mentor, Nicole, who supported him to rebuild confidence, establish routines, and strengthen his belief in what he could achieve.

Through ongoing coaching, encouragement, and practical preparation, Nicole helped Shaquille navigate personal challenges and prepare for employment opportunities.

When a position opened in March 2026 for a Teacher’s Assistant at a local school, Shaquille was encouraged to pursue it. Nicole supported him with interview clothes, and worked to ensure he had all the tools to succeed.

In time, his confidence grew, and he gained the courage to reach out to the school to sit down and have a conversation with them to discuss the position.

Shaquille attended, and following a positive conversation with the employer, was offered the role of Teacher’s Assistant.

This marked a significant milestone in Shaquille’s journey as both the first interview he had ever attended, and the first job offer he had ever received.

“I always made sure I was there for him whenever he needed support. This is a big role for him, and I’m so proud,” Nicole, Youth Mentor, said.

As of May 2026, Shaquille now provides classroom support and mentoring for First Nations students in Years 6–8, helping to strengthen engagement, connection, and cultural support within the school community.

“I am excited to start this new job at the school. I was a student there and it gave me heaps of opportunities. I am looking forward to helping the young fellas out,” Shaquille said.

We’re excited to continue providing post-placement support for both Shaquille and his employer to support his long-term success, and ensure he thrives in his new role.
