Vanessa finds the spark to embark on an exciting new career 

After working as a foster carer for three years, Vanessa made the decisive choice to step back last year to focus on raising her young child.  

However, after recently connecting with Bamara through the Parent Pathways service, she was inspired to reignite her career aspirations and explore options that would help her family in the long run. 

Parent Pathways, along with the guidance from her Support Mentor, Edith, provided Vanessa with the resources, support, and direction she needed to achieve her primary goal of securing employment. 

Vanessa first reached out to our team in Palmerston in January 2025, feeling excited and eager to take advantage of the assistance offered through Parent Pathways.  

She worked with Edith to develop a Goal Plan that effectively balanced her responsibilities as a parent with her career goals. This plan also outlined small, manageable steps to boost her confidence, prepare her for work, and use the available resources and support services. 

“Edith made me feel comfortable, accommodated my needs, and provided me with options that were available,” Vanessa said.

“She listened to my backstory, what I was going through, and would ask how things are going, making sure you’re always updated.

“It was great knowing that I had that kind of support.”

Vanessa had applied for numerous jobs at the time but was not successful, which left her uncertain about her career prospects.  

Despite the setbacks, she consistently attended her appointments and looked forward to her time with Edith, quickly developing a strong rapport with her.  

This positive relationship propelled Vanessa to improve and solve her job search challenges. She valued Edith’s guidance and support, seeing it as a crucial opportunity to gain insights and develop strategies that could enhance her employability. 

Success came swiftly for Vanessa, and just a month later, in February 2025, Vanessa celebrated securing a position as an Administration Supervisor based in Darwin.  

“Edith listened to me, and I loved our catchups. She was able to go above and beyond for me,” Vanessa said.

“I’m glad I came across Bamara, I’m now doing something that I love and passionate about.”

While childcare arrangements initially posed a potential barrier, her childcare subsidy was processed quickly, enabling her to start her new job without delay.  

Through Parent Pathways, Vanessa also utilised Engagement Support vouchers and financial support to prepare for work, including workwear and reimbursement for necessary eyeglasses.  

Edith continues to provide ongoing support for Vanessa, which is crucial in helping her stay on track with her personal and career goals.  

Reflecting on Vanessa’s progress, Edith noted her dedication and resilience.   

“Vanessa’s commitment to achieving her goals has brought me much joy,” Edith said.  

“Watching her get the job and strive for even greater success is incredibly rewarding.”
