Finding employment in the competitive job market can prove difficult when you have limited access to the resources and experience you need to get your foot in the door. It’s a struggle that ParentsNext participant Ziggie unfortunately knew all too well.

Ziggie was referred to our ParentsNext program in January 2024 after expressing her struggles finding employment. Today, she is flourishing in her new full-time job as an after-school carer, with continued support from her Support Mentor, Edith, who helped her lay the foundation for a bright future.

She had faced a pushback from jobs she had applied for, with no references on her resume, minimal qualifications, and limited access to the resources necessary to find work independently.

Being a single mother of three children, it was important for Ziggie to find work to support herself and her family, ensuring that they could thrive and live comfortably.

Ziggie moved from Alice Springs to Darwin, and she got connected with Edith from our Palmerston team, and they sprung to action, with Edith doing all she could to help Ziggie to be job ready.

Over the next few months, Edith supported Ziggie in refreshing her resume and getting the training and qualifications that would assist her in finding a career in many industries. Ziggie gained her Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), Responsible Conduct of Gaming (RCG), and a Working with Children Check (WWCC).

Edith also helped her regain her learner driver licence through DriveSafe and is currently supporting her to soon hit the road with her provisional licence.

Ziggie was also provided with a mobile phone, appropriate workwear and work shoes, and utilised Engagement Support Vouchers, all covered through the ParentsNext Participation Fund.

As Ziggie worked diligently gathering each qualification, she grew in confidence. Edith referred Ziggie to job seeking and apprenticeship sites, and also connected her to local organisations, and the search was on its way. She soon found an open position in after school care and landed an interview.

When she attended the interview, the employers were completely won over by her bubbly personality and kind demeanour, and they hired her after the very first interview, an impressive and incredible achievement.

“I’m just so glad that they’re trusting me. I’m so delighted to know that she has found employment,” said Edith.

Ziggie is now still employed with the after-school care, bringing joy to all of her peers and the children she cares for. We wish her every success in the future.
