What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is one type of support to help you live in our home environment.

It includes help or supervision with daily tasks, like personal care or cooking meals, and helps you live as independently as possible, while building your skills.

With SIL you may be able to live by yourself in a home-like environment provided by Bamara, with highly trained Support Workers, or in a group setting creating relationships with other participants and developing Social and community skills.

Who is it for?

SIL is for people with higher support needs, who require some level of help at home all the time.

This will mean you need a certain amount of help throughout the day, 7 days a week. This includes overnight support to ensure the safety of our participants.

How we can support you

Please note that everyone is unique and therefore has different support needs.

If you need assistance in gaining SIL funding through the NDIS, Bamara NDIS team are only a phone call away and would love to help.

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) has three levels of support that SIL can provide if you are eligible:

Support is not 24/7 and usually only includes supervision of living arrangements.

Support is given 24/7 and includes assistance with most daily tasks.

Support is given 24/7 and includes positive behaviour support for challenging behaviours aside from assistance with daily tasks.

What are the benefits of Supported Independent Living?

  • Promotion of independence: Allows you to receive care and assistance with daily tasks by Support Workers while still being empowered to make your own decisions regarding your care.
  • Availability of support 24/7: Provides access to support services when needed so you can focus on living your life to the fullest.
  • Social opportunities: Provides the opportunity for socialization with others, which can help improve your social skills and well-being.
  • Reduces feelings of isolation: provides many opportunities to feel a sense of belonging and improve mental health.
  • Develop new skills: It helps you learn and develop new skills, like cooking, taking care of household tasks, and budgeting money, with the assistance of Support Workers.
  • Provide Care Relief: Provides care relief to parents or carers who may no longer be physically or mentally able to provide care.
