Positive change inspires Samantha to kickstart a rewarding local career

Samantha had two driving ambitions, to be a role model for her children and to be able to help people in her local community. Through hard work and dedication, Samantha was able to achieve both of her ambitions.

The fulfilling career journey not only benefits her family, but is sure to have a lasting and positive impact on the lives of others.

Meeting the demands of raising a large family was Samantha’s sole focus back in 2019 when she first connected with our team in Taree through the ParentsNext program. Later in October 2021 when her children were older and there was more time for her own career ambitions, Samantha reconnected with her Bamara Support Mentor, Merv, for assistance with studying the Diploma in Nursing at her local TAFE.

They both agreed to put together a pathway plan focused on ensuring Samantha was prepared for the challenges, obstacles and rewards of her career pathway. Samantha knew that her journey would require hard work, dedication and perseverance.

Along the way Merv was in regular contact to provide encouragement and access to the ParentsNext Participation Fund for practical assistance with the cost of expensive academic textbooks, as well as the police check, shoes and clothing required for work placements.  

In the trying times, particularly when the long hours of travel and time away from family took a toll, Samantha told Merv that she was able to stay positive and find something extra in the determination to make sure all the sacrifice and time didn’t go to waste.

At each of the blocks of work placement spent in Hunter and New England hospitals, Samantha received glowing reports and continued to gain the confidence to see herself making a difference in her own regional community. Soon after graduating, Samantha did make a successful application for employment and started permanent employment as an Aboriginal Health Care Worker in October 2023.

Merv praises her unwavering commitment to the goal in the face of so many challenges. We celebrate the example Samantha provides for others in overcoming significant roadblocks by drawing strength from the undeniable value of such a worthwhile vocation.

Samantha will now be able to see her family and broader community benefit from the decision to set herself a career goal, and the dedication shown in then persisting to achieve this well-deserved recognition.
